How Commercial Refrigeration Repair Works

Here’s what happens from your first call until your equipment is holding temperature again.

Call or Request Online

Call 508-419-9010 or request service online. Tell us the unit, the temperature it’s reading and how long it’s been running warm. If product is at risk, say so first; a walk in climbing past 41°F is an emergency, and dispatch treats it as one.

Rapid Dispatch

We send a refrigeration technician who covers your town. In summer, when a failed walk in in Harwich Port or Mashpee can’t wait for someone crossing the Sagamore Bridge in beach traffic, having technicians who live on the Cape is the difference between saving product and discarding it.

Diagnose & Repair

The technician tracks down the cause, whether it’s a failed fan motor, a refrigerant leak, a bad start relay or a clogged coil, and repairs it with parts from the van when they’re in stock. Refrigerant work is done by EPA Section 608 certified technicians using proper recovery equipment.

Test, Document, & Follow Up

Before sign off, the technician confirms the unit is pulling down and holding temperature, not just running. The work is documented for your records and backed by Harris Warren’s 90 day parts and labor guarantee. If the same problem returns within 90 days, we come back.

Highly Skilled Technicians

Harris Warren’s refrigeration technicians train through Tech24 University and hold the EPA Section 608 certification federal law requires for refrigerant work. Customers name them in reviews, and one who manages hundreds of refrigeration doors calls them patient, top shelf pros.

We Stock the Most Commonly Used Parts

Vans carry the refrigeration parts that fail most: fan motors, start relays, capacitors, thermostats, defrost timers, door gaskets and common refrigerants. Factory specification parts keep warranties intact and more repairs finished on the first visit.

90-Day Guarantee

Every refrigeration repair is backed by Harris-Warren’s 90-day guarantee on parts and labor. If the same problem returns within 90 days, we return and fix it at no charge.

Why is my compressor short cycling, turning on and off rapidly?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

Usually a low refrigerant charge, a failing start relay or capacitor, or a dirty condenser that trips the unit on high pressure. Short cycling wears a compressor out quickly, and the compressor is the most expensive part in the system. Shut the unit down if possible and call before it fails.
Why is my blast chiller not cooling food fast enough?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

An overloaded cabinet, a low refrigerant charge or a failing evaporator fan motor. The Food Code requires cooked food to cool from 135°F to 70°F within two hours and to 41°F within six hours total. A chiller that can’t keep up puts every batch of soup or chowder at risk. Call for service before the next large batch.
Why won't my prep table keep food at 41°F during service?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

Lids left open during the rush, pans overfilled above the cold zone, blocked air vents or a unit parked next to the fryers. Worn gaskets and a failing fan add to it. Warm pans are a health inspection violation and a food safety risk. Keep lids closed between orders and call if temperatures still drift.
Why is my walk in cooler running warm after a big summer delivery?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

A door propped open during unloading, torn strip curtains or worn gaskets let in warm, humid air faster than the system can remove it, and a weak evaporator fan makes it worse. If the box stays above 41°F, cold held food falls outside Food Code limits and may have to be discarded. Call if it hasn’t recovered within an hour of closing the door.
Why does refrigeration equipment struggle after sitting closed all winter?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Dust and debris settle on coils, gaskets dry and crack, and mice often nest in condenser compartments of closed buildings, chewing wiring. Units that start fine can fail within days of heavy use. Book a startup inspection a few weeks before opening so problems are found before product goes in.
Why does my freezer door frame or floor keep icing up?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

A failed door frame heater, a torn gasket or a door that doesn’t close fully lets moist air in, where it freezes. Ice buildup can stop the door from sealing at all, and a slick floor is a slip hazard for staff. Chip nothing off the gasket; call to repair the heater or door closer.
Why are the condenser coils on my outdoor unit corroding so fast?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Salt air. Near the coast, salt deposits on aluminum fins and eats them away, so the coil can’t shed heat. The compressor then runs hotter and longer until it fails, and a compressor replacement costs far more than coil care. Have coastal coils inspected every season and ask about coated or replacement coils.
Why is my ice machine making less ice in July?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Hot kitchen air, a dirty air cooled condenser, a clogged water filter or scale on the evaporator plate. Ice makers produce noticeably less when the air around them is hot, right when bars and restaurants need the most ice. Clean or replace the filter, keep the vents clear and book a descaling.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Commercial Refrigeration Repair FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most from restaurant, c-store, and grocery operators. Don’t see yours? Give us a call.

Do you offer commercial refrigeration repair in West Yarmouth and across Cape Cod?

Yes. Harris Warren provides commercial refrigeration repair from its West Yarmouth office across all of Barnstable and Plymouth Counties, including walk in cooler repair. That covers Hyannis, Dennis, Falmouth, Mashpee, Sandwich and Harwich Port, and across the Cape Cod Canal to Wareham and Plymouth.

Our refrigeration technicians live in the communities they cover, so a failed walk in in Wellfleet or Plymouth gets a local technician rather than one driving in from off Cape, which matters most in summer traffic.

Which refrigeration and ice machine brands does Harris Warren service?

Harris Warren services equipment from 44 manufacturers, including refrigeration brands True, Master-bilt, Nor-Lake, Beverage Air, Continental, Delfield, Turbo Air and Irinox, and ice machine brands Hoshizaki, Manitowoc Ice, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic and ICETRO.

If your equipment is from another brand, call anyway. Our technicians routinely work on units outside that list, including walk ins and remote systems that came with the building decades ago.

Should I repair or replace an old walk in system or reach in?

Repair usually makes sense when the box is sound and the fault is a fan, relay, thermostat or leak. Replace when an older unit’s compressor fails, leaks keep returning, or the system runs on R-22, which is no longer produced in the United States.

R-22 production and import ended in 2020 under EPA rules, so recharging an older system gets more expensive every year. Because Harris Warren sells and installs new equipment, your technician can price a repair and a replacement on the same visit.

How does salt air on Cape Cod affect refrigeration equipment?

Salt air corrodes the aluminum fins on condenser coils, especially on outdoor and rooftop units within a few miles of the water. A corroded coil can’t reject heat, so the compressor runs hotter and longer and fails sooner.

Coastal kitchens benefit from more frequent coil inspection and cleaning, and when a coil does need replacing, a coated coil holds up better in salt air. Your technician can tell you which of your units are most exposed.

What temperature should my walk in cooler and freezer hold?

Keep walk in coolers at 41°F or below, the Food Code limit for cold holding, and most operators target 36°F to 38°F for a safety margin. Freezers are typically held at 0°F or below.

Log temperatures at least twice a day. If a cooler climbs above 41°F and doesn’t recover after the door has been closed for an hour, call for service and check product temperatures. Health inspectors look at both the thermometer and your logs.

What does refrigeration maintenance include, and how often do I need it?

A maintenance visit covers condenser and evaporator coil cleaning, refrigerant charge checks, gasket and door inspection, thermostat calibration and defrost testing. Most kitchens need it at least twice a year, and busy or coastal kitchens often more.

For seasonal Cape businesses, the two visits that matter most are a startup check before opening and a mid season visit when equipment is working hardest. Ice machines also need regular descaling and filter changes, which can be scheduled on the same plan.
